Perfect Day is reimagining dairy protein without cows. We’ve invented the world’s first real milk proteins made without animals, so you can enjoy the real taste, texture, and nutrition of dairy — but produced sustainably and without the downsides of factory farming, lactose, hormones, or antibiotics.
We’re creating a new category in the market. Something that satisfies the needs of dairy lovers and plant-based fans alike. We’re taking the compromise out of the dairy aisle and restocking it with the best of both worlds — the real taste and texture of dairy, produced sustainably, without the downsides of factory farming, lactose, hormones, or antibiotics.
Because our animal-free dairy proteins are identical to those found in cow’s milk, they deliver the same creamy, melty, silky taste and texture of conventional dairy that plant-based alternatives just can’t match.
Our animal-free whey protein has the same nutritional profile and culinary functionality as whey protein from cow’s milk, but it’s vegan; free from lactose, cholesterol, and hormones; and has a smaller environmental footprint than conventional whey protein isolate. Our ingredient is ideal for providing a rich, creamy, smooth, and indulgent eating experience and excels in product applications requiring solubility, gelation, water-binding, foaming, heat stability, and emulsification.
We’ve developed a type of microflora that can ferment simple plant ingredients to produce the milk proteins, casein and whey, historically found in milk. We started with a natural type of microflora known to produce large amounts of pure protein for food and gave this flora a “blueprint” that allows it to ferment sugar and create real dairy protein. This is the very same blueprint, in the form of DNA, which cows use every day.
Our protein is made using safe and proven fermentation techniques similar to how many common food components like vitamins, probiotics, enzymes, and natural flavors are made.
Our process is much cleaner and more resource-efficient than animal farming, and it’s the cornerstone of our new approach to dairy. To learn more, check out our process page.
Flora is an all-encompassing term that refers to a microorganism such as bacteria, yeast, or in our case, fungi. We chose to use microflora to make our proteins because they have a long history of safely making ingredients in many foods you eat today, and because microflora are particularly good at producing animal proteins.
Our product is a great option for vegans as there are no animals involved whatsoever – we hear from vegans every day that are excited about our products! There are many reasons for following a vegan diet and lifestyle though so we encourage each person to decide individually whether our products are right for them.
Regardless, our product is not suitable for those with milk allergies because our protein is identical to the proteins from cows. Products made with Perfect Day are labeled with, “Contains: Milk Protein.” Read more here.
No! Our dairy protein is 100% lactose-free.
No! Our dairy protein is naturally hormone- and antibiotic-free.
Yes! Our dairy protein is gluten-free and does not contain wheat, rye or barley. Please note, however, that some products which incorporate our protein may also contain gluten.
Yes. Safety is of paramount interest to us and we have been working closely with regulatory agencies in multiple countries since our company was founded in 2014. Our animal-free protein has been confirmed as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), and has received a “no-objections” letter from the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
No. Perfect Day creates milk proteins. Any product made with our protein is not dairy-free and contains a milk protein allergen.
For the first time in the history of milk, actual cow’s milk proteins (whey and casein) are being produced in something other than a cow (fermentation tanks, visit our process page for more). It doesn’t involve a single animal and doesn’t contain lactose. But our product is molecularly identical to the milk proteins produced by cows, so customers with a dairy allergy should avoid any product made with Perfect Day animal-free protein. Customers should take the same approach to our partner’s products as they would any food containing dairy, and if they have questions, they should rely on the expertise of a health professional. We also encourage customers to check allergen labels closely. Our partners include a milk allergen warning on the front and back of product labels, e.g. “Contains: Milk protein.”
No, animal-free protein does not contain GMOs.
The microflora we work with are really good at producing different kinds of protein naturally. We simply give them instructions for producing exactly the type of protein we want—in this case, the milk proteins casein and whey. We then filter out the flora, leaving only pure protein. In other words, genetic engineering is part of our process, but genetically modified organisms or any detectable genetic material is not present in our protein.
Fluid milk is one of the many products we’re developing with partners. If you know of, work for, own, or are thinking about starting a brand that might want to incorporate flora-made dairy protein, drop us a line!
We launched the first animal-free ice cream made with Perfect Day in 2019 and will be launching products with more partners every year! Check out the Find Us page on our website to find out what, where, and how to get your hands on the first products made with Perfect Day. We are continuing to forge new partnerships with food makers around the world that will enable us to bring a whole variety of new animal-free products to market.
Products made with Perfect Day are required to list our animal-free protein on their ingredient labels as “non-animal whey protein.” This is intended to make clear to people that the protein is nutritionally identical to the protein found in cow’s milk, but is made from a process not involving animals.
Products containing animal-free dairy protein are required to include an allergen disclaimer as well. For more information, see our FAQ about milk allergies.
Obviously, Perfect Day does not support or condone the use of animal testing. Since the beginning, we’ve been motivated by a desire to bring a more compassionate approach to food manufacturing.
But what we are pioneering – making dairy protein (casein, whey) without animals – has never been done before. It’s an entirely new category of food ingredients, not because of what it is but because of how it is made.
In order to establish that a new ingredient is safe for human consumption, governmental regulatory agencies require extensive food safety tests. For new ingredients, like ours, these tests often require animal testing to ensure safety for human consumption. While we do not condone the exploitation of animals for either consumption or product testing, this step is, unfortunately, an important part of a) securing partnerships with food companies that will use our protein in their products and help us have widespread impact, and b) assuring consumers that products containing our new ingredients are safe to consume.
We fully support replacing animal testing with other validated methods to ensure the safety of new food ingredients and always ensure that these animal testing studies are conducted by accredited third-party facilities that follow proper animal welfare guidelines.
The name Perfect Day was inspired by a Lou Reed song. Two dairy scientists discovered that calm, happy cows produce the most milk. And cows are happier when they listen to music! One of the songs that made cows produce the most milk was the song ‘Perfect Day’ by Lou Reed. (Who knew cows were so cool?) As a company on a mission to make cows, people, and the planet happier, it seemed like a perfect fit.
